Kålvik vindkraftshamn - The key to the expansion of offshore wind power in Sweden and Europe
At Kålvik, on the northern part of the Swedish west coast, we are creating a port with perfect conditions for the efficient and large-scale deployment of offshore wind power. The port is adapted for both bottom-fixed and floating foundations.
The port is the hub of the expansion
Strömstad creates conditions for the expansion of offshore wind power in Sweden and Europe.
Offshore wind power is facing large-scale expansion in Sweden and throughout Europe. This requires the availability of ports with the right characteristics, which has been found in several reports to be in short supply. At Kålvik in Strömstad, in the far north of the Swedish west coast, is the place that has Sweden's best conditions and among the best in all of Europe. A facility is planned here that will be able to become a hub in the expansion. With great depth near land (+70m), sustainable surfaces on land, sheltered location and the possibility of creating large flat areas, the site is ideal.
Work on the permit process is ongoing and there is great political agreement in Strömstad Municipality about the initiative. The project is jointly run by the companies Thon Property, Orvelin Group and Grimsrud Entreprenad.
Kålvik Hamn: A prerequisite for the expansion of offshore wind power
Kålvik Hamn offers optimal conditions for offshore wind power. The depth close to land and good bearing capacity make the place unique in Sweden.
Large depth near shore for efficient installation.
Opportunity for local jobs in wind energy.
Aiming to create large and rational production
Large areas for production and warehouses
Strömstad Municipality
We are experiencing strong support from both politicians and officials in Strömstad Municipality. The municipality has been running the detailed planning process for Kålvik since 2019. Officials at Strömstad Municipality have seen, in dialogue with the County Administrative Board, that regulatory changes are needed at national level in order for the project to be implemented.
The port in Kålvik
Kålvik north of Strömstad is the place in Sweden with the best natural conditions for establishing an offshore wind farm.
Wind power
The need is expected to be high within a few years, and also from a European perspective, there will be a major shortage of ports with the right facilities.
Timeline for Kålviks Vindkrafthamn
Detail Plan and Permit
As high natural values prevail, it is necessary to reinstate a national interest in deep and protected harbour locations.
Preparation of the area and expansion of the port
The large-scale rollout is expected to expand greatly in the 2030s. Then the Kålvik wind power port will be ready.
Offshore wind power generation
Great depths near shore (+70 m), good load-bearing capacity onshore, sheltered location and minimal tides make the place unique.
Maintenance base for offshore wind operation
The first floating offshore wind farm on the West Coast has now been approved by the government. The damage to be built is needed ports in the immediate area.
FAQ
Kålvik Wind Power Port is a planned port facility for offshore wind power. It aims to create a Swedish production facility for the construction of foundations and conditions for the installation of wind turbines to the sea. The plant will create local jobs and promote sustainable energy.
Operations include the production and assembly of wind farm foundations, storage of components and installation of wind turbines. The Kålvik wind power port will serve as a central point for these activities. This contributes to the efficient and sustainable development of offshore wind power.
A future wind power port will be designed so that the impact on valuable nature is as small as possible. At the same time, Sweden needs more fossil-free electricity generation, not least because climate change is one of the biggest threats to biodiversity.
To be able to build Kålvik wind power port and contribute to fossil-free electricity, both an environmental permit and a detailed plan are required. Officials at Strömstad Municipality have seen, in dialogue with the County Administrative Board, that regulatory changes are needed at national level in order for the project to be implemented. This is about the reinstatement of the national interests for deep harbors that existed on the site from the 70s until 2022.
At the moment, we are looking at the overall possibilities for building the Kålvik wind power port. The more specific soil issues we will have to come back to later in the process. One of the unique features of the place is that there are very few residents who will be affected by the activity.
Construction is planned to begin as soon as the detailed plan has been approved and all permits are in place. The timeline depends on different states and processes. We will keep the public informed of progress.
The project is run by Grimsrud Entreprenad together with the property owners Thon Property and Orvelin Group as the joint company Kålviks Hamn AB.
Kålvik is the only port in Sweden that has the right conditions for the production of floating foundations and the installation of floating wind turbines planned in the Skagerak. Kålvik is unique because the site has several of the important natural conditions required to be able to build a wind power port. Here there is a natural sea depth close to land, with a sufficiently deep sail chute as well as a stable bedrock that can withstand heavy foundations. In addition, the port of Kålvik is naturally sheltered from the weather and, unlike many places in Europe, has no major differences in tides.
The Port of Kålvik will create jobs and contribute to local development. The project also promotes the transition to renewable energy in Sweden. The Port of Kålvik is expected to create new jobs as well as stimulate local development and the economy. The project will also promote education and skills development in renewable energy. All in all, the project contributes to very large societal benefits on several levels.
Calculations from similar studies conducted in other countries show that the Kålvik wind power port has the potential to create 2000-3000 permanent jobs over the period 2030-2050. These include jobs in the construction of the port, the production of floating foundations and in the assembly of the wind turbines. In addition, the subsequent servicing of the wind farms is expected to provide additional jobs even after a short period of time. A survey from the Danish city of Grenå has found that an offshore wind farm with 110 wind turbines generated about 70 local jobs.
